Microscopic Root Canal Treatment

Microscope-Assisted Root Canal Treatment in Progress
At The Oral Edit, every root canal is performed under a dental operating microscope by Dr. Anushree Talnikar, MDS in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, a root canal specialist with 6+ years of experience. The microscope magnifies the inside of the tooth many times over, so hidden canals, cracks and infection can be seen and treated precisely — which means more comfortable treatment and a better chance of saving your natural tooth.
We are located near Dutta Mandir Square, Viman Nagar, and treat patients from Kalyani Nagar, Kharadi, Wadgaon Sheri, Airport Road, Dhanori, Vishrantwadi and across East Pune.
What is a root canal treatment?
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or an injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it becomes inflamed or infected. This is what causes the severe, throbbing toothache many people experience.
A root canal treatment (RCT) removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals inside the root, and seals them so bacteria cannot return. The tooth is then protected with a filling or crown. Done well, a root canal relieves the pain and lets you keep your own tooth instead of having it extracted.
Signs you may need a root canal
- Severe or throbbing toothache, especially when chewing or biting
- Pain that wakes you up at night
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the food or drink is gone
- Swelling in the gums or face, or a small pimple-like bump on the gum
- A tooth that has darkened in colour
- A deep cavity, a large old filling that has broken down, or a cracked tooth
Sometimes an infected tooth causes no pain at all and is only found on an X-ray. If you have any of these signs, an early check-up often means simpler treatment.
Why a microscope makes a difference
Root canals are tiny — often narrower than a needle — and many teeth have extra canals that are almost impossible to see with the naked eye. A missed or poorly cleaned canal is one of the most common reasons root canal treatments fail. Working under a dental operating microscope allows Dr. Anushree to:
- Find hidden and extra canals that can be missed without magnification
- Clean and seal more precisely, lowering the chance of re-infection
- Remove less healthy tooth structure, keeping the tooth stronger
- Spot cracks early and judge honestly whether a tooth can be saved
- Retreat failed root canals and remove old filling material or broken instruments
Our root canal services
Single-visit root canal treatment
Many straightforward cases can be completed in one appointment. Whether single-visit treatment is right for you depends on the tooth and the extent of infection, which Dr. Anushree will assess at your first visit.
Root canal retreatment (re-RCT)
If a tooth treated earlier has become painful or infected again, it can often still be saved. Retreatment involves removing the old filling material, finding and cleaning any canals that were missed, and resealing the tooth — work that relies heavily on microscope magnification.
Cracked tooth treatment
Cracks can cause sharp pain when biting or sensitivity that comes and goes. Under the microscope, the extent of a crack can be assessed so that the right treatment — a crown, root canal or, if needed, extraction — can be recommended.
Endodontic surgery (apicoectomy)
When infection persists at the tip of the root even after root canal treatment, a minor surgical procedure called an apicoectomy can remove the infected tissue and seal the root end, helping save the tooth.
Emergency toothache relief
For severe tooth pain or swelling, we try to see patients as soon as possible to relieve pain and control infection. Message us on WhatsApp for an urgent appointment.
What to expect during your root canal
- Consultation and X-ray: Dr. Anushree examines the tooth, takes an X-ray and explains your options, including whether the tooth can be saved.
- Local anaesthesia: The area is fully numbed so you stay comfortable throughout.
- Isolation: A thin rubber sheet (rubber dam) keeps the tooth clean and dry, protects you from swallowing anything, and stops saliva bacteria from entering the canals during treatment.
- Cleaning and shaping: Under the microscope, the infected pulp is removed and each canal is cleaned, shaped and disinfected.
- Sealing: The canals are filled and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering.
- Restoration: The tooth is closed with a filling. Back teeth usually need a crown afterwards to protect them from breaking.
Recovery and aftercare
Most people return to work the same day. It is normal for the tooth to feel slightly tender for a few days; over-the-counter pain relief usually helps. Avoid chewing hard food on the treated tooth until the final crown or filling is in place, and keep brushing and flossing as usual. If you notice swelling or pain that increases instead of settling, contact us.
Root canal treatment cost in Pune
The cost depends on the tooth (front teeth have fewer canals than molars), whether it is a first treatment or a retreatment, and whether a crown is needed. You will get a clear estimate after your consultation. See our dental treatment costs in Pune.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Is root canal treatment painful?
With modern local anaesthesia, most patients feel little to no pain during a root canal — it usually feels similar to getting a filling. The treatment actually relieves the pain caused by the infection.
How many visits does a root canal need?
Many straightforward cases are completed in a single visit. Teeth with severe infection, curved or complex canals, or retreatments may need two or more visits.
What is the difference between a normal and a microscopic root canal?
In a microscopic root canal, the dentist works under a dental operating microscope that greatly magnifies the tooth. This helps locate hidden canals, clean them thoroughly and detect cracks, which improves the chances of long-term success.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth (premolars and molars) usually need a crown because they take heavy chewing forces and can crack after treatment. Front teeth can often be restored with a filling. Dr. Anushree will advise based on how much healthy tooth remains.
Can a failed root canal be treated again?
Yes. Root canal retreatment can often save a tooth whose earlier treatment has failed, especially when done under a microscope. In some cases, endodontic surgery (apicoectomy) is recommended.
Is it better to save the tooth or extract it?
Whenever it can be predictably saved, keeping your natural tooth is usually the better long-term option. Replacing an extracted tooth with an implant or bridge takes more time and cost.
How long does a root-canal-treated tooth last?
A well-treated and properly restored tooth can last for many years, often a lifetime, with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups.
Where can I get a root canal near Viman Nagar?
The Oral Edit is near Dutta Mandir Square in Viman Nagar, Pune, and is easily reachable from Kalyani Nagar, Kharadi, Wadgaon Sheri and Airport Road. Book on WhatsApp at +91 91467 42925.
Who is the best root canal specialist in Viman Nagar, Pune?
Dr. Anushree Talnikar, MDS in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, is a root canal specialist at The Oral Edit in Viman Nagar with 6+ years of experience. She performs every root canal under a dental operating microscope.
Is single-sitting root canal treatment safe?
Yes, for suitable cases. When the infection is controlled and the canals can be fully cleaned in one appointment, single-sitting RCT is as successful as multi-visit treatment, and it means fewer visits for you.
How much does a root canal cost in Pune?
The cost depends on the tooth, the number of canals, whether it is a retreatment, and whether you need a crown. Molars cost more than front teeth. You will get a clear estimate at your consultation, and you can see our treatment costs page for a guide.
What is an endodontist, and do I need one for a root canal?
An endodontist is a dentist with a master’s degree (MDS) specialising in root canals and saving natural teeth. Complex cases such as molars, retreatments, cracked teeth and curved canals benefit from specialist care.
Can I eat after a root canal?
You can eat once the numbness wears off, usually after 2–3 hours. Chew on the other side and avoid hard or sticky food on the treated tooth until the permanent filling or crown is placed.
Is a root canal better than tooth extraction?
In most cases, yes. Saving your natural tooth keeps your bite and jawbone healthy. Extraction leaves a gap that usually needs an implant or bridge later, which costs more and takes longer.
Do you offer emergency root canal treatment near Kharadi and Kalyani Nagar?
Yes. For severe toothache or swelling, message us on WhatsApp at +91 91467 42925. The clinic is a short drive from Kharadi, Kalyani Nagar, Wadgaon Sheri and Airport Road.
